Abstract:

The Ciba-Geigy Chemical Corporation facility is located in Toms River, NJ.  This site has been targeted for multiple investigations by, both, the EPA and NJDEP.  Since the early 1970s, Ciba-Geigy Corp. has been under scrutiny for questionable operational methods.  Upon an inspection in 1980, the site was recommended to be placed on the NPL (National Priorities List).  Multiple facilities were found to be leaking various pollutants into the environment.  Soil, ground and surface waters were being contaminated by high levels of VOCs and heavy metals.  Determining that it was an immediate threat to public and environmental safety, the Ciba-Geigy site was placed on the NPL in 1983.  An ROD (Record of Decision) was signed in 1989 to remove, treat, and replace contaminated groundwater.  Site sources were removed later on, in the 1990s.  Soil and groundwater remediation continues and the site remains on the NPL.
